Following Your Passion – How Important Is Discovering What You Love & Doing It Every Day?

This blog talks about your passion (what brings us joy), and offers ideas on how to discover your passion if you aren’t sure what it is…

Passion is an internal experience, not an external event. What do you love to do? Explore the things that make you feel passionate. Passion is within – a strong reaction to anything. To connect with your passion, first connect with how you feel.

*We all need to DO less, and FEEL more*

We are often too busy living in our heads and we will not find our passion there. It lives in our body. In the connection between your head and your heart.

Begin to engage in activities that allow you to connect your head with your heart. Talk to good friends about how you feel – not what you think.

Check in regularly with how you feel during the day. Set your watch to beep every hour and check in and notice how you feel. This drops your energy from your head to your heart.

We need to give ourselves permission to explore what makes us happy. Take your time to figure out what you are going to do. We never make smart choices when under stress or pressure. When stressed you’ll make a choice from your head which sets you up to fail.

We are often too busy doing what we think we should do, instead of giving ourselves time to explore. Early childhood programming often gets in the way of what we want.

Inside of everyone of us is that tiny seed of the “you” that you were meant to become. Unfortunately, you may have buried this seed in response to your parents, teachers, coaches, and other adult role models as you were growing up.

Don’t live someone else’s dreams – somehow we often get stuck trying to figure out what other people wanted us to do. We learned how to act and now to get their approval. As a result, we do a lot of things we don’t want to do, but that please a lot of other people…

  • we study law because Dad wanted us to
  • we settle down to please Mum
  • we get a ‘real job’ instead of pursuing our dream career in the arts
  • we go straight to University instead of taking a year off and backpacking through Europe

Start on the smallest level by honoring YOUR preferences in every situation – no matter how large or small.

Not being clear about what you want and making other people’s needs and desires more important than your own is simply a habit. You can break it by practicing the opposite habit.

There is a statement out that I love! It goes…

“Figure out what you love to do as young as you can, and then organize your life around finding out how to make a living out of it”.

Isn’t that great? Imagine how happy we would all be if we followed this advice?

For those who are not sure what your passion is, here are some ideas on discovering it:

  • if you won $6 million in lotto and had bought 5 houses, 8 cars, travelled the world 3 times….then what would you do? If money was not an issue – how would you want to spend your days?
  • what are your hobbies? What do you do in your spare time for fun?
  • when you open the newspaper what’s the first section you go to?
  • if you had to chose only one section from a book shop what would it be, that you absolutely must have?
  • what kind of dreams or desires did you have for your children? Sometimes they can be our desires.
  • look at past relationships..what did they do? – it might be something we want for ourselves…
  • what movies do you like or have you seen more than once?
  • make a list of the times you have felt most joyful and alive. What are the common elements of these experiences?

Develop a passion map:

  • gather magazines and catalogues, rip out images that you connect with
  • create a vision board. Things that make you smile and feel strong.
  • make a collage and passion map
  • look out for any clues in this…

Once you choose something, one thing, gather a group of friends together and brain-storm. You will be amazed at what people come up with.

Write it all down and there you have an instant action plan.

Pick the top 5 actions that seem to make sense. Then decide what is the one thing you are going to do when you leave today to start creating abundance in your life.

Then give yourself permission to pursue it without it having to be the last thing you ever do in your life! Give it a try for 3-6 months before deciding whether or not its for you.

Another approach to clarifying your life purpose or passion, is to set aside time for quiet reflection – time for a period of meditation. Ask yourself – what is my purpose for living? Or what is my unique role in the universe? Allow the answers to simply come to you. Let it be as expansive as you can imagine.

What often stops people from expressing their true desire is they don’t think they can make a living doing what they love to do. Make a list of 20 things you love to do, and then think of ways you can make a living doing some of those things. Be creative and let your imagination run!

Once you know what your life purpose or passion is, you can organize all of your activities around it. Everything you do should be an expression of your purpose. If an activity doesn’t fit that formula, then don’t work on it!

Your inner guidance system is your joy. We are born with an inner guidance system that tells us when we are on or off purpose by the amount of joy or happiness we are experiencing. The things that bring us the greatest joy and happiness are in alignment with our purpose.

All you have to do is decide where you want to go by clarifying your vision, lock in the destination through goal-setting, affirmations and visualization, and start moving in the right direction.

Your inner GPS will keep unfolding your route as you continue to move forward. Once you are clear about what you want, and keep your mind constantly focused on it, the how will keep showing up – sometimes just when you need it and not a moment earlier!

Life is meant to be fun and joyful….and living the life you were born to live, is the most important achievement of all!
